Protest Boyle Removal From Welfare Fund By Coal Miners Walkout
Southern West Virginia coal miners walked off the job overnight in a show of dissent against the April 28 federal court order removing United Mine Workers President W. A. Boyle as a trustee of the Welfare and Retirement Fund. About 20,000 miners in McDowell, Wyoming, Raleigh, Logan and Fayette counties left work, signaling organized support for Boyle and opposing the court action that also removed trustee Josephine Roche. District leaders warned the strike could spread, while officials said the unions neither oppose nor endorse the action. The outcome could affect Christmas bonuses and future fund administration as the case moves toward possible appeals, including to the Supreme Court.
