Beckley Cutoff Nears Traffic, June Deadline Set
Beckley cutoff on Route 19-21 nears completion with last concrete pour. County Road Commissioner M J Meadows expects the new segment ready for traffic by June 25, though shoulder work remains. Hatfield Construction laid three miles of concrete using local labor where skilled help was unavailable. The link will bypass the city, connecting Skelton to the east with the former route near Raleigh between the Black Knight Club and R M I park. Meadows noted Peach Tree and Sand Lick roads are progressing well and will reduce ford crossings as creeks swell.
