Judge Postpones Trials at Widen

Polio Cases Outnumber Totals in Record Year
The Public Health Service reports infantile paralysis cases in 1953 running about 30 percent ahead of 1952, a record year with 57,636 cases. Last week 47 states reported 248 new cases, more than double the 119 in 1952. The disease year totals rise to 1,235 cases versus 846 a year ago, with increases in several states, notably the South Atlantic and South Central regions.

Wyoming Boy 11 Hurts in Truck Cycle Wreck
An 11 year old New Richmond boy, Otis Ray Smith, was seriously injured at 9 15 am when his bicycle collided with a truck between Mullens and Pineville. He received emergency care at Wyoming General Hospital and was transferred to Bluefield for further treatment and observation. The truck driver was identified as Mr Casto of Bailesville, a sand operator. The boy’s brother was killed two years earlier in a crash near Pineville.

Two Motorists Fined by Magistrate Thurman in Hazardous Driving Case

House Requests More Money For VA Hospitals
The House Appropriations Committee proposed a total of 5.284 billion dollars for the Atomic Energy Commission Selective Service System Veterans Administration and Tennessee Valley Authority for the new fiscal year starting July 1. The plan cuts about 1.171 billion from Truman’s request, trims the VA budget mainly in readjustment benefits and pensions, and surpasses Eisenhower estimates by 31 million in maintenance and operation funding.
