Plan Ends New York City Strike Shuts Sewage Operations
An eight thousand strong wildcat walkout by city workers over pension terms ended Tuesday after union leaders accepted a four point plan. The strike halted sewage treatment and trash incineration, closed bridges and halted services, with 1.3 billion gallons of raw sewage dumped into waterways until operations resumed. Mayor Lindsay praised New Yorkers for unity as bridges reopened and crews returned to work.
