Evelyn Sue Rapp, 20, Home Economics student at West Virginia University and Renick resident, crowned June Dairy Month Area Princess. Runner up is Carol McClung of Ronceverte. other entrants include Dorothy House Buckeye, Linda Miller Beckley Route 1, and Katy Jo Shelor Mount Hope. Judges were Hazel Phillips WOAY TV, Mariel West Beckley, and Rev. Don Francis. Rapp advances to state finals in Bluefield later this month.
Wyoming County Circuit Judge Robert M. Worrell rejected a petition signed by six residents seeking redress over a May 27 incident involving Thomas Smith. The petition accused Smith, in his roles as Wyoming County Court president and county council member for the Department of Public Assistance, of threats over a DPA check. Judge Worrell said no action could be taken and advised petitioners to hire an attorney and pursue legal channels through proper courts. The matter was returned to Charles W. Cook of Pineville. Harley R Hedge commented that it should be handled through legal channels.
Senator Wayne Morse introduces a bill to cut congressional pay to 53 cents per hour from 22 500 a year plus extras. He says the move follows the Senate Labor Committee delaying a 1 per hour minimum wage for laundry workers. He notes thousands of laundry workers earn as little as 53 cents per hour.
Senator Fulbright leads White House briefing push for Senate ratification of the new U S Japan security treaty. He and the Senate Foreign Relations Committee expect to consider approval next Tuesday to speed passage before President Eisenhower’s June 19 Tokyo visit amid protests in Japan.

A shot was fired through a window at the home of Mr and Mrs Speed Pendry in Matheny around 3 30 am by an unknown person. Sheriff Bert Short said a .32 caliber gun was likely used and the bullet lodged in a wall. Pendry, a miner for Eastern Gas and Fuel Associates at Kopperston, observed the shooter leave in a car. The case was not yet investigated, with plans to start later that day.

Robert Lee Stewart 84 Naoma, awaiting trial for the murder of Herbert Gunnoe Jr., is gravely ill at his home after a heart attack in Raleigh County jail. Stewart was released on bond May 25 and had pneumonia last Christmas. The shooting followed a dispute over jukebox volume at Naoma Cafe.

Mt Hope Little League equipment was burned and destroyed including dugouts bases scoreboard numbers score books balls bats chest protectors helmets and bleachers. Estimated damage is 600 according to Charley Canterbury league president who said theft was attempted but a fire was lit in a dugout. The league will still play tonight using donor equipment and equipment owned by Canterbury while the Lions Club sponsors replacement efforts. Police are investigating the incident.
