A Register feature by Dave Garten profiles Beckley pawn shops and their customers. Dealers report most items are reclaimed, with watches leading pawns and repeat customers common. One anecdote recalls a man pawning glasses then asking for the door to find the liquor store.
The shopkeeper recalls odd pawned items and sharp lines from customers. A man with three cartons of clothes and jewelry offered $20 to die and disappeared. One customer pawned a glass eye, insisting it was worth a lot, while a gun buyer claimed the weapon was brand new.
The North Beckley Public Service District seeks injunctions to force nine property owners to connect to its new sewer facility. Proceedings set for 9:30 a.m. June 17 before Raleigh County Circuit Court Judge Norman Knapp. Notices administered to listed residents. District faced bond issues and potential receivership. roughly 700 of 950 customers connected so far.
A 1 am fire in Rhodell destroyed the Chandler home, forcing Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Chandler from bed. Neighbors began gathering clothing for the couple as authorities blamed an overloaded circuit. No injuries were reported. the Rhodell and Mullens fire departments said the building was too far gone.
Raleigh County Circuit Court jurors ordered to report Wednesday by Judge Norman Knapp to begin trials for the May term. Docketed is Frankie Lee Harmon infant vs Henry C Nichols Welch stemming from a January 4 1964 Harper Road collision that left the boy injured and seeks $150000. W A Thornhill NT represents Harmon. Paul J Fourney represents Nichols.
Emmett Shannon of Beckley faced a city police charge after pulling into oncoming traffic on S Fayette St, causing a three car crash with damages. Mabel Dillard of Beckley and Phillip Shaffer of Marlington were the other drivers. Dillard was treated for minor injuries.
Faye Rogers of Beckley earned a place on West Virginia University’s Dean’s List for the second semester. An English major, she is the daughter of Mrs. Faye A. Rogers of 2119 South Kanawha Street.
