Angel On Horseback nurse leads frontier childbirth work
In 1938 Kathleen Browne, a Suffolk born English nurse midwife, became director of the Frontier Nursing Service in Kentucky after serving with the British Hospital for Mothers and Babies. She helped mountain women of Perry, Leslie and Clay counties by horseback and on foot, replacing granny women and expanding care. Browne, appointed to the Order of the British Empire, recalls housing conditions and the on horseback era, noting the shift to jeeps but horses kept at two outposts for recreation.
