Draft Rejectees Are Given Hope in West Virginia

A Whitesville youth received a draft notice but was rejected for induction due to severe cellulitis. He became one of 1,490 WV youths turned down in a year. Through Health Referral and Counseling Service, he received medical care, with four days in hospital and follow up by nurses and counselors. The program, now nationwide, aims to improve health and civic use, not simply to pass exams. Director Dr. N H Dyer notes WV ranks high in services for medical and mental rejects.
