At the Annual Presbyterian Men's Conference in Charleston May 21 to June 1 Beckley members received an attendance award for numbers present and distance traveled. The event featured Jack Carroll painting The Ninth Hour and was attended by Beckley leaders including Sam Thompson and Al Walker with local pastor Rev J W Witherspoon and Dr B B Richmond serving as officers.

Beckleyan received one of 46 scholarships totaling nearly $9,000 for the coming fall term at Morris Harvey College. Miss Kathleen Springer, 18, daughter of Mr and Mrs George Springer of Beckley, was among the winners. She graduates Beckley College this spring and is employed with Beckley Newspapers Corp. Other area recipients included Carel Mae Hicks and Marian Ray Holbrook.

Beckley Optimist Club members hosted about 30 area boys at Maxwell Hill Community Park on Wednesday afternoon. The 10 volunteers supervised baseball, horseshoes, and badminton and provided hot dogs, pop, and ice cream. Additional outings are planned throughout the summer.

Camping Plans Discussed By Blue Jay
A Ruth Payne led discussion on the Methodist Youth Camp to be held at Little Beaver Park this summer during the Blue Jay Methodist Youth Fellowship meeting held at Rev. Virgil Cook's home. Peggy Cook presented a devotional "A Challenge To Youth" and four delegates were debated for West Virginia Wesleyan College June 16. Youth Waives To Grand Jury In Edwight Shooting Case
A 16 year old Edwight juvenile waived to the Raleigh County Grand Jury on a felonious assault charge tied to a shooting of Tommy Mollett with a .22 rifle. Mollett was hospitalized for a shoulder wound and listed in good condition. The youth, who said the shooting was to stop alleged abuse of his mother, was arrested Sunday night and released on a $1000 property bond.

Funeral for Victim of Self Inflicted Wounds Saturday
Funeral services for a Mullens area farmer who died of self inflicted gunshot wounds will be held at p.m. Saturday at the New Spruce Grove Church. Rev. Phillip Graham to officiate. Tol bert Whitt 36 reportedly used a two foot stick to trip a trigger on a 16 gauge shotgun, found with a note at the Smokehouse near his farm home. The note asked family to distribute his belongings and stated he could not stand any more illness and would rather be dead. Survivors include wife Nora and a daughter Mrs. Riley Mitchem plus three sons and several daughters. Burial will be at Spruce Grove Cemetery. Investigating deputies were Wendell Cook Strat Houck and Verne Morgan.

Princeton bulletin reports Frank M. McGlamary 46 of Berkeley Street Princeton died at 12 30 p m Wednesday in a local hospital. He was a miner with Crouse Coal Co Keystone and a member of United Mine Workers Local 5997 and Woodmen of the World. Burial arrangements pending arrival of a son from Africa.

Beckley Police Court Clears Drunk Driving Cases
Two defendants waived to the Raleigh County Grand Jury on Thursday night before Beckley Police Judge Edward P. Stansbury. Paul Dwiggins of Beckley forfeited a 106 dollar bond on a driving while drunk charge and faces six months revocation of his operator license. Harry Jackson, 39, of MecAlpin posted 500 dollar property bond on a similar charge. Roy Eugene Martin of Glen White waived on a driving with revoked license charge and was released on 500 dollar bond. Virginia D. Blume of Beckley forfeited 0 dollars on leaving the scene of an accident and lost control charges. Lee E. Stafford of Beckley forfeited 30 dollars for defective equipment and unnecessary noise. James W. Wallace, 18, Beckley forfeited 20 dollars on speeding. Five additional drunk cases resulted in total 33 dollars forfeited.

Funeral arrangements for Mrs Birdle May Kincaid 73 of Mount Hope Route 1 are incomplete after her death at noon Thursday in a local hospital following a short illness. Born March 10 1885 in Beckley she was the daughter of the late John and Julia Brammer and a member of the Daniels Missionary Baptist Church. Survivors include three sisters Ellen Tyree Maple Fork Maude Lucas Beaver and Barbara Meador Beaver two brothers Lois and William Brammer Calloway Heights three grandchildren and one great grandchild. The body is at Calfee Funeral Home.

Shower Honors Mrs. C Ritchie In Morgantown Move
A farewell shower at Friendship Wall First Methodist Church honored Mrs. Charles C. Ritchie Jr. hosted by 12 hostesses. Her husband, a supervisor of State schools in the Southern area, has transferred to Morgantown, beginning June 11, and will study for his doctorate at West Virginia University this summer. The Ritchie family plans to move to Morgantown this week.

Pag C Anderson, son of Opie and Mrs Anderson, received a Hope Natural Gas Co scholarship to Illinois Institute of Technology Chicago for four years full tuition in Gas Technology with possible summer work. Selected from 41 applicants, Anderson is an Oceana High School graduate, honor student and four-year football player. An extensive shower honored him with many attendees and gifts.

YEW Members Plan June Party at VFW Club
At Oak Hill VFW Auxiliary Post 310 a meeting outlined a June 18 party at 8 p.m. at the VFW Club with guests allowed. Hospital chairwoman Sue Harris reported on the May 29 party at Veterans Hospital Beckley and plans for an August 8 event there.
