General MacArthur ordered the removal of 24 top Communist leaders in Japan after Red attacks on American troops. The government barred them from politics, with seven losing parliamentary seats and all prohibited from party membership and any political activity. The action follows his directive.
The government announced a purge targeting 24 top communists including their main public speakers and leaders. Telegrams and letters notified Reds after a cabinet session reviewing MacArthur's letter. National police halted potential retaliation by arresting two union leaders over the Memorial Day demonstration in which American soldiers were attacked.
After Yoshida's Liberal Party retained power in elections, Tokyo signaled a move to ban the Communist Party. An occupation official said MacArthur's order stops short of dissolving the party, while his letter excludes militarists who led Japan into expansion. The occupation vows tougher measures against subversives.
MacArthur criticized a new faction infiltrating Japanese politics, accusing it of perverting truth and inciting mass violence to destabilize the country. He named purged politburo leaders Kyuichi Tokuda Sanze Nozaka and Yoshio Shiga as prominent parliament members in the purge.
Chester Pa Secretary of Defense Johnson declares the sinister forces of Communist imperialism can be stopped short of war. He argues Americans possess military economic political and psychological advantages and that communism will fail in the long run. Johnson warns a frightened nation with mass destruction weapons could be dangerous if unchecked.
Voter turnout was light in Pineville and Oceana at noon as about 25 candidates compete for city offices. Pineville candidates include Vaughn Stewart for mayor and several runners for council and recorder posts. in Oceana, mayoral hopefuls are Fisher Baxter Conley and Crozier, with race for recorder include Lewis Shumate Browning Cozort and council contenders Kidd Walker Nunn Osborne Bean Cozort Lively Manning Lilley Mitchell.
The Associated Press reports Russia's Marshal Stalin was labeled the worst dressed man on the international scene by haberdasher Paul D. Gilbert. Gilbert, leader of the National Association of Retail Clothiers, told the Association of Better Business Bureaus that Stalin should visit his store in South Bend, Indiana for a summer suit, hat, and shoes to improve his image.

A U S Saufley destroyer reported 37 survivors from a twin engine airliner that crashed 275 miles northeast of Miami. The crew said all rescued were in good condition and search continued for remaining passengers and crew with multiple planes and the destroyer aiding. Pilot Joseph Halsey of Seattle and Co Pilot William Holleran were among saved.
Charleston report from Cabell S. Davis shows unemployment payments rose to 1,413,970 in May, up from 1,291,658 in April and 1,201,040 in May 1949, driven largely by mining area unemployment. Readjustment allowances for former servicemen amounted to 77,840 in May, with veterans’ eligibility largely expired. state trust fund stood at 83,157,392 as of May 31, 1950, down from 90,572,579 a year earlier.
Huntington district supervisor Farley W Bell announced Cabell County growth of 10,344 since 1940 rising to 107,803 from 97,459. Huntington itself shows 86,160 residents, up 7,324 from 1940. Milton fell to 1,546 while Barboursville rose to 1,940 from 1,550.
A block of 25 000 General Motors common stock sold at 91 a share at market open, the highest price since 1929, up 2.50. Demand rose after GM directors proposed a two for one stock split, potentially lifting GM A to over 88 million shares outstanding, a record for any company.
The West Virginia education system is noted as providing equal facilities and salaries in higher education for Black students. WV maintains Negro colleges at Bluefield and Institute and offers state subsidies to cover the gap when graduates attend out-of-state or private universities.
Charlotte FBI reports a former convict Carl Baskin Hensley and his red-haired wife Martha Louise Hill Hensley were captured in a Cowpens area home after a five day multi state pursuit. They had engaged highway patrolmen in gunfire and dodged roadblocks in Tennessee and Georgia before being seized before rising from bed. Edward Clyde McAllister, 34, of Huntsville Alabama, was captured in Spartanburg while driving behind the Hensley car.
Chattanooga report on the 18th annual meeting of the National Association of Tax Administrators cites U S internal revenue data showing one in four individual returns contain errors. Of these, 91 percent favor the government, with understatements totaling 1.3 billion dollars and overstatements 90 million. the government can recoup about 600 million.

NEW YORK The stock market fell sharply with major issues dropping from $1 to as much as $6 a share before finding a bottom. Ticker tape lagged four minutes as the market sank, marking one of the year’s worst declines though many experts still expect a long term upward trend.
Belgium's coalition government resigns after the pro Leopold Social Christian Party wins in Sunday's elections. Outgoing Premier Gaston Eyskens will report resignations to Regent Prince Charles, who may name a premier designate tomorrow. Catholic leaders foresee a possible recall of King Leopold, exiled in Switzerland since 1940.
The St. Albans city council in first reading approved an ordinance imposing a two percent tax on all telephone and telegraph messages originating in the city, with exceptions for points outside West Virginia. It would also levy a $100 yearly license fee on local telephone and telegraph companies, effective July 1 if passed on final reading.

She sought a divorce as the conduct embarrassed her before Judge John Niblick. Charles Perry Township continued that a man cannot win an argument. Divorce granted with a judge remark.
West German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer pressed the Allies to form a federal police of 25,000 to answer to Bonn. Allied officials worry about Franco British and American reaction and fear the move could seed a new German army without strong safeguards. A final decision from the Allied high commissioners is expected within a month.
The Association of Better Business Bureaus was invited to investigate and reform improper advertising and sales in retail men’s clothing. Paul D. Gilbert of the National Association of Retail Clothiers and Furnishers cited price exaggerations, nylon misuses, and wholesale factory-to-consumer selling as harms to public trust and democracy.
West Virginia Governor Okey L. Patteson told a Senate Education and Public Welfare subcommittee that oil imports threaten state revenues by shrinking coal output. He cited a 40 million ton annual displacement and a 50 percent drop in coal shipped to Atlantic Coast cities, noting coal and railroads are major tax payers. He warned sales tax and gross receipts tax declines already reduced state revenues in early 1950.
In Iowa, Senator Hickenlooper led Republicans with a wide margin for re nomination. Albert Loveland gained the Democratic bid for the senatorial nomination backed by the Brannan farm plan as results from 1,888 of 2,474 precincts showed Loveland at 30,638 votes to Krasche's 24,426. others trailed.
