Steelworkers union heads into new steel contract talks
J W Abel, president of the United Steelworkers Union, says money is the key issue as three days of preliminary talks opened. Chief negotiator R Conrad Cooper says discussions will be friendly and not about demands. Negotiations aim for fair agreements before August 1 when current contracts expire. Ten days of company level talks begin June 10, with a final national round starting June 24 in Pittsburgh. The 11 companies employ about 480000 USW members, shaping deals for another 500000 workers. Back in school Prince Charles will resume studies at Cambridge after his investiture as Prince of Wales in 1969.
