The Supreme Court denied seven Nazi saboteurs’ petitions to file writs of habeas corpus seeking to escape Roosevelt’s military commission. Chief Justice Stone announced the denial and affirmed the district court orders. The military commission, appointed July 2, 1942, is proceeding with final arguments as of today.

Striking Tank Employees Return to Jobs in Berwick

At American Car and Foundry tank plant in Berwick Pennsylvania striking workers resumed duties after a Roosevelt backed push for production. The 1000 workers had walked out over the discharge of three men, challenging union leadership and delaying intra haulage tank production amid ongoing contract talks. Roy Constine of the CIO United Steel Workers read the president's plea to strikers at a mass meeting.

Seven Accepted For Navy Service

Navy Recruiter Johnny Mc Dorman released this morning the names of seven men who were accepted as applicants for enlistment. He also said that Clarence Franklin Barr of Sophia left today for Charleston for final examination and enlistment. The group includes Thomas A. Garren Beckley Claude E. Steel Workers Seek Guaranteed Pay Increases At U S Steel

Pittsburgh representatives of the CIO United Steel Workers and five U S Steel subsidiaries open negotiations on a 44 cent a day wage rise and union dues check off. The demand, backed by the War Labor Board in the Little Steel case, seeks retroactive pay from February six and a simplified grievance process for about 157 000 workers across four companies and 250 000 at the five subsidiaries.

Four Sign Up For Marines From Beckley Area

The local Marine Recruiting Station announced this morning the acceptance of four men from the Beckley area as applicants for enlistment in the United States Marine Corps. They are Charles Earl Simpson of Hinton Emery Taylor of Otsego Franklin David Miller of Sophia and Howard Calvin Criddle of Hinton. They will leave for Charleston immediately for final examination and enlistment.

Ship's Captain Taken Prisoner in Atlantic Submarine Action
