Jury Clears Mingo Officials Of Vote Buying Conspiracy
A federal jury in Huntington acquitted four Mingo County officials of charges they conspired to buy votes in the 1968 general election. Sheriff Harry Artis and Del. T. I. Varney expressed happiness at the verdict, while former state Sen. Noah Floyd offered no comment and Assessor Arnold Starr had been excused after illness. The defense argued no proof of wrongdoing existed and noted Democrats’ long countywide win streak, as a prosecutor warned such conspiracies threaten free government.
