Nehru asks Portugal to close New Delhi legation
Prime Minister Nehru urged Portugal to shut its legation in New Delhi by August 8 due to Lisbon’s persistent refusal to negotiate India’s claim to Portuguese India. He noted India had already closed its Lisbon legation in 1953. Indian Railways also halted freight and passenger services to Goa. The Portuguese legation did not oppose the move and Lisbon was expected to order closure. Minister Vasco V. Garin is on leave.

Night of Terror Ends for Couples in Delaware Bay
In Lewes Delaware two couples were rescued from a water logged rowboat after a perilous night in Delaware Bay. James W. Bennett 58 and Marion 53 of New Castle along with Chance T. Keene 48 and Lillian 45 of Kirkwood rented a 14 foot boat at Pickering Beach five miles north of Lewes. A Sunday storm swamped the craft and forced jettisoning of the motor. The four drifted until dawn with one oar and an ebbing tide. Keene collapsed and Mrs Keene kept him afloat. Fishermen later spotted them as fog lifted and Coast Guard crews arrived. They were all taken to Kent General Hospital in Dover for exposure and other injuries.
