Calico Ball recalled as bravest Old South event in Birmingham
Eye witness Mrs. J D Beale recalls the Calico Ball of New Year’s Eve 1873 in Birmingham, held to celebrate Linn’s Folly bank. The village lacked paving and gas, candles lit the ballroom, Confederate flags and smilax adorned the hall, and a Montgomery negro band played Southern tunes as residents, poor and hopeful, danced in makeshift finery.
