Apollo 15 countdown under way for lunar mission launch
The countdown for Apollo 15 began at 6 30 a m EDT and aims for a 9 34 a m Monday liftoff with David Scott Alfred Worden and James Irwin. They plan a 67 hour moon surface stay and Worden a six day lunar orbit, while final rehearsals continue in a Falcon trainer. A lightning strike on the 445 foot umbilical tower caused no damage, and power fluctuations in the command ship Endeavour are not regarded as threatening the launch. Astronauts will wear spacesuits during lunar module jettison in moon orbit following Soyuz 11 deaths, per safety review.
