Army scientists seek super germ weapon in biowarfare program
Forty Army researchers at Ft. Detrick Maryland report progress in creating bacteria with new hereditary traits including toxin formation and antibiotic resistance. The program aims to expand bacteriological warfare potential by transducing traits and cross breeding strains, raising concerns over deadly “super germs” that could challenge antidote development. The subcommittee was briefed with guarded language about isolating mutlant strains and transduction of characteristics.

State Tax Reflects Personal Income Hike in WV
CHARLESTON West Virginia State Income Tax Director Clifford Lantz said tax returns indicate higher personal income in the state over the past year. Based on 1961 estimates of 2,145,680 dollars in income tax, a bit over 500,000 dollars was expected quarterly this year, but 856,189 dollars were collected. Lantz suspects much of the total reflects taxes paid in full, and a drop may appear in the second quarter ending June 30. He expects second quarter returns to confirm a substantial annual increase, but will wait for the figures before finalizing projections.
