Platform Fight Costly Defeat For Scranton
In San Francisco the Republican convention ended with a resounding Goldwater victory and a costly defeat for Gov. William W. Scranton. The platform rejected Scranton’s push for a tougher civil rights plank and a direct condemnation of the John Birch Society, while affirming Goldwater’s campaign positions and presidential control over nuclear weapons. Rockefeller’s bid to denounce extremism drew gallery boos, but the platform remained aligned with Goldwater’s views as the convention closed after midnight PDT.
