Consumers' Question Box on orange coating Citrus Red No. 6F
The Florida Citrus Commission explains the skin coloring on some oranges is a dye used to enhance color. It does not penetrate the fruit or affect the edible skin and is FDA approved as Citrus Red No. 6F. The coating is usually resistant to washings, and staining of hands is uncommon, possibly due to uneven application.
