Supreme Court Refuses Review on Beckley District Appeal

The West Virginia State Supreme Court refused to review an appeal by Rev. Omer L. Williams and his wife Christine challenging the creation of the North Beckley Public Service District. The 32-2 decision left intact a Raleigh Circuit Court order requiring Williams and others to use the district's sewer facilities. The couple argued illegality of the district's creation in 1962 and unnamed property damages without compensation.

H Reitz Named Deputy Assessor

Howard Reitz of Beckley was appointed by the Raleigh County Court as deputy assessor at its regular meeting Tuesday. He fills the vacancy created when Wade S Brubeck moved to the assessor post after being appointed last April to fill the unexpired term of Steve Carpenter who resigned for health reasons.

Heirs Appeal Over Marshall County Coal Property Fraud

The West Virginia State Supreme Court granted an appeal to heirs of more than 11 000 acres of coal land alleged to have been fraudulently sold by former Marshall County officials. The petition asserts Everett Moore and officers Rogerson and McGrumphy manipulated the sale for 3500 dollars when value was 455 358 dollars and that Rogerson held land in trust for them. The case has wended through circuit and high court since 1962 with two dismissals citing no fraud found.

Suit Filed Here Seeks 6133 From Lilly and Lilly

American Accessories Inc filed a 6133.57 suit in Raleigh County against Riley W. Lilly and Clyde Lilly. Promissory notes dated May 1 and Aug 16 1966 for 1515.95 and 4467.38 were alleged. Checks totaling 1605.19 drawn on Beckley National Bank allegedly bounced for insufficient funds. Also noted: State Road Commission condemnation action to acquire land near Pine Lodge Nursing Home for U.S. 19 and U.S. 21 construction.

Explosion Hits Tai Po Office as Hong Kong Curfews Tighten

An explosion damaged the Tai Po administrative headquarters in rural Hong Kong while the building was empty. Across Kowloon demonstrators burned three buses and a taxi as curfews began on Hong Kong Island amid ongoing clashes and police action.

Treadway Trial Deliberations Continue After 11-1 Verdict Hint

Jurors initially reached an 11-1 verdict but were told unanimity is required. Landmark Decision Lets Juvenile Be Prosecuted For Murder

The West Virginia Supreme Court ruled that 14 year old Robert Keith Campbell can be tried for murder in Kanawha Intermediate Court. The decision follows the abolition of capital punishment and cites an exception in state law allowing non juvenile courts to handle capital cases. Campbell was indicted by the June 1966 grand jury for the slaying of Allen B Crookshank.

Midway Jetport Group Elects Leadership for West Virginia Plan

Huntington Mayor R O Robertson Jr was elected president of the Southwestern Airport Authority of West Virginia a group formed to push a midway jetport for southern West Virginia. Charles Farley became first vice president and Don Baker was secretary treasurer. Second vice president position left open for Kanawha County. State official Angus Peyton said a $40000 preliminary engineering study is needed with federal funding and potential support from Ohio and Kentucky. West Virginia must raise the remaining $8000.
