Charleston talks fail to settle four month concrete walkout
Mayor John Copenhaver said talks to settle Charleston concrete mixer truck drivers strike broke up in disharmony. He accused Pfaff & Smith and Criss & Shaver of pressuring drivers, calling their firms a monopoly. AFL Teamsters initially accepted a proposed contract, then officials changed their minds. Other firms rejected the plan. The proposed deal would have raised wages by 72 cents first year and 72 cents second year, with a small third year increase. Copenhaver noted union representatives sought settlement and acted reasonably.
