Interstate road funds clash pits Barron against Underwood
In a sharp exchange triggered by a federal penalty of six point six million dollars, Gov. Barron and former Gov. Underwood assailed each other over West Virginia road funding. Barron accused Underwood of bungling and sabotaging the interstate system, while Underwood charged the current administration with opposing rights of way and urged legal action to recover the withholdings. The dispute followed a federal notice that penalties, tied to rights-of-way irregularities in Brooke and Jackson Counties, would be deducted from federal road allocations through 1972.
