300 Die In Ship Blaze Off Beira Coast
An estimated 300 people died when the Portuguese ship Save ran aground and burned off the east African coast near Beira. The 2,000 ton vessel carried 550 aboard including 200 white troops 300 African laborers and 50 crew. Cargo of gasoline and ammo exploded engulfing the ship. Survivors reached a remote beach as planes ferried in medical aid and a doctor treated the severely injured.

West Virginia traffic accidents over the weekend added two deaths, bringing the year total to 161. A 17 year old girl, Mary Joe Kirkland of South Charleston, died when a car plunged down a 75 foot embankment. Carl E. Cyphers, 20, of Clarksburg, was killed when a car left West Virginia 58 near Stonewood and overturned. Robert Markle, 23, and Kay Kennard, 16, both Huntington residents, drowned in the Mud River while on a date. Beatrice Fourtney, 50, died from injuries after a fall at a sister’s home in Itmann, Wyoming County.

Thomas Love of Salem Road, previously free on 1500 bond for bad checks, was remanded to Fayette County Jail in default of 2000 bond on two new check forgery charges. He had been released June 26 after waiving prelim hearing on three bad check charges and was arraigned this morning before Magistrate Frank Simms. Snared Capsule To Be Analyzed
HONOLULU UPI A gold plated kettle shaped Discoverer capsule snared during its descent after two days in space was flown to California for analysis of its contents. The 300 pound capsule was captured by an Air Force plane 60 miles northwest of Honolulu as it parachuted over the Pacific after circling the earth at 18000 miles an hour. Discoverer XXVI was launched Friday from Van denberg Air Force Base California by scientists who hoped for a four day spaceflight. Sunday’s trigger returned it to earth for technical reasons.
