Levi Lilly of Flat Top pleaded guilty to murder for beating his wife Goldie Lilly to death on May 3 in Mercer County. Special Judge Ajax Smith sentenced him to life imprisonment after Lilly asked for mercy, remanded to jail, while details emerged from an eye witness, Lilly’s brother Ted.
In circuit court Judge Clarence W. Meadows awarded final custody of the child of Harry M. and Carrie Price to the mother after prior orders. The case followed a temporary shift to the father by Judge W. H. File. Also, L. Louise Hall was granted 65 dollars monthly alimony in a divorce action from Fort Arthur Hall. Judge Meadows allowed Carl James Lawson and Thelma Hamilton Harvey to wed without the usual three day wait in extraordinary circumstances.
City Recorder Frances Biggs warned local merchants to obtain licenses by August 1 or face closure. She said three fourths of stores are not licensed yet and urged merchants to apply at city hall to avoid a last minute rush.
H. H. Chin a 34 year old Charleston resident from Park Drive was admitted to Beckley Hospital after his automobile overturned on Route 2. He was treated for a head injury and released. He said a large truck blocked the road forcing him off the highway and into a ditch where the car rolled over. he sustained bruises but continued to Charleston.
The Nat Berman Company waste meat salvage plant at Mabscott was sold for 28500 to Benjamin David and Nathan Platnick, scrap iron dealers of Bluefield. The sale, effective July 3, transfers ownership of the plant and equipment and places Benjamin Platnick in charge with Jack Donovan as assistant. Ralph Berman, son of the late owner, and Young Berman are mentioned in the proceedings with plans to return to Morgantown for studies.
Allied dispatches report a 17 day battle in Egypt showing Auchinleck’s forces closing Rommel’s lines near El Alamein. British columns push the Axis back as long range US bombers and British submarines strike supply routes. Axis reinforcements and transport ships are reported destroyed, with Rommel’s position described as narrowing toward a desert bottleneck.

Nine year old Teddy Scott of Price Hill was admitted to Beckley Hospital after being carried by flood waters for over 200 feet into a draining culvert. He sustained cuts and bruises on the head and chin but the injuries were described as slight and he found the incident amusing.
Five men were accepted yesterday as applicants for enlistment in the United States Marine Corps according to Sergeant Michael Waczula at the local recruiting station. They will depart soon for final enlistment in Charleston. Names are Jasper Earl McCoy Beckley Olin Dale Bostic Beckley area David Calvin Cook Woyco Fred Williams Beckley and Vester Whittaker Beckley.
