Freed By Cuba Two Of 18 Face Grim Reception
In Miami two of the 18 Americans freed by Cuba faced a grim reception while Fidel Castro hailed four Cuban fishermen released by U.S. authorities. FBI warrants targeted Dr. Bernard Bender and his son Lawrence from Long Beach with other son Michael and Joseph McGuire aboard the White Cloud. Castro welcomed the fishermen at a Havana rally and accused U.S. authorities of cowardice over handcuffing and chaining four men during transfer. The Cubans released include the White Cloud, the Battler tug, and the Saturna with crews aboard after Cuba freed the four Cubans who had been jailed in Florida for fishing illegally. A federal judge in Miami pared fines and time already served.
