State Auditor Edgar B. Sims proposes a staggered payroll period to reduce check delays for 13,000 salaried employees. Currently most agencies run on a calendar month, causing backlogs. Sims notes July 12 could pass before all current checks go out. He doubts authority to enforce nonmonthly periods.
Three Raleigh County Day Camps Fitzpatrick Park Tams Mountain and Marsh Fork Brownie will reopen registration until 4 p.m. Thursday per camp director Mrs. Lou Manning. July 20 opening date noted for Marsh Fork Brownie Camp and other sites.
Weather report notes mostly sunny skies across the region with highs from 76 to 84 degrees, 80 to 84 outside the mountains and cooler, fair conditions tonight. Tonight's low 44 to 60 degrees with fair, cool conditions and a warm trend continuing Wednesday in western areas.

Raleigh County Court sitting as a Board of Review and Equalization requests the Assessor deliver all real estate and personal property assessment books to the County courtroom by 10 am Friday. Commissioner Ward vows full review this year while the personal property books near completion except for Beckley city. Deputy Assessor notes progress hampered by staffing and equipment. Court also awarded a county contract for carbon jackets to Biggs Johnson and Withrow at 550, Klaus Equipment Co. bid 900 plus.
Mullens WV area man Thomas C. Patterson 23 forfeited a 27 bond after not appearing in Mullens City Police Court for reckless driving. He was arrested Monday night after his car hit Bill McGhee’s sedan at Guyandotte and Woodland avenues. A four month old child was treated at Wyoming General Hospital after the crash. Patterson was accompanied by two people en route to Princeton to arrange bond on another matter. Damages were not estimated.
In Tacoma Lewis Army stockade, Sgt. William E. Coogan and Specialist 5 C S B Huller were convicted of peddling overseas assignments for up to 200 dollars over 12 to 18 months. Coogan got 15 years hard labor and dishonorable discharge. Huller 3 years hard labor and bad conduct discharge. They lost all pay and were reduced to recruit rank. Eleven soldiers testified paying fees.
In Mullens on the Pierpoint Mountain approach to the Hotchkiss Turnpike a two-vehicle collision at about 8:45 a.m. Monday caused estimated damages over $1,000. Beth Davis 19 and her brother Travis were in a 1957 station wagon en route to Beckley when speed on the winding road led to a collision with a sand and lumber truck driven by Bibb W. Snyder Crab Orchard contractor. No injuries or charges were reported. The incident coincides with State Road Commission engineers surveying a Mullens to Maben route to ease bottlenecks on the existing road.
A Bud residence of the Estes family was destroyed by fire early today with arson suspected. Neighbors reported hearing a break in around 12 30 a m and a fire alarm brought Mulins firefighters to the scene. Robert Estes and his wife and four children were away visiting relatives in Wytheville when the blaze occurred. Fire Chief Clyde Newsome said officers were looking into arson as a possibility.
Sherwood Glutz reports that state police arrested 364 motorists for speeding over the weekend. He notes improved safety amid political chatter and odd fashion trends, urging fewer speeds to reduce accidents and injuries.
Beckley will host two international exchange students on July 13 for a three day stay. The 72 students come from 27 countries and spent the prior year living with American families while attending senior year in the northeast. They are part of 1,170 students from Europe, Central and South America and Asia under American Field Service.

In Monroe Washington 38 hostages were freed unharmed after a tear gas raid at 4 03 am ending a 13 12 hour siege by four young convicts Richard A Murray Donald DeCourcy Robert E Jasmin and David K Owens The rebels seized visitors and guards during an escape attempt and demanded only a car with no Canadian border access The operation ended with the four prisoners isolated and praised for a smooth rescue by state correction officials
G G Greene chief clerk and budget director Raleigh County Board of Education goes to Clarksburg for uncle Sherman Ogden's funeral. He is accompanied by his mother Jennie Green and sister-in-law Nelson Greene. Ogden's only survivor besides Beckley residents is son Eugene of Ravenna Ohio.
Roger Kinder, 13, who had been missing from Twin Poplar six miles west of Whitesville since Monday, was found about noon strolling in Madison. He said he ran away after arguing about garden work. A 100-person search had been conducted. he is held at the Sheriff’s Office in Madison awaiting his parents.
MOSCOW AP The Soviet Union asserts the recent dog bearing rocket and recovery operation is the most powerful single stage space launcher yet. A leading Soviet scientist called the feat an important step toward manned space flight, with Khrushchev predicting people will fly soon. Officials did not specify if the rocket reached orbit or burned up, and no exact altitude was disclosed. The report compares it to earlier canines Laika and other U S and Soviet tests, noting the ongoing race in space exploration.
Washington AP says President Eisenhower vetoed the omnibus housing bill calling it extravagant and inflationary and urged Congress to craft a less costly measure. Pittsburgh AP reports Fd Mathews hit a home run off Early Wynn giving the National League a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the 26th All Star game.
John Billy Hall received one to 10 years plus an extra five years for a prior conviction at Raleigh County Criminal Court. Harlon Earl Williams was placed on a three year probation after a one to 10 year sentence for breaking and entering. Also given three year probation were Earl Douglas Morton and Dewey McKay Crook. Lloyd Darrell Clark got one to 10 years and credit for jail time. Robert James Aliff drew six months and $50 fine for maiming, while John Wesley Johnson got eight months for attempting a felony.
