A 1 200 man South Vietnamese unit moved into Quang Tri city set up a command post and searched districts while government spokesmen delayed recapture status until the walled citadel is controlled. The operation followed a week of heavy bombing and a large task force pushing north into Quang Tri province.
Detroit United Press International reports Chevrolet Vega recalls becoming routine as GM announces a third campaign for about 500000 1971 and 1972 Vegas to inspect an axle shaft risking rear brake failure and wheel detachment. Earlier recalls in April affected 130000 1972 models for fuel exhaust issues and in May 350000 1971 1972 models for a faulty carburetor bracket risking throttle stick. Some 1972 cars from April remained unrepaired when May recall was announced.
The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for parts of north central West Virginia and northeastern counties from 8 am to 8 pm today. On July 4 two inmates fled Huttonsville Correctional Center then four more men aided them. James Ratliff 23 and Zonnie Kuthy 22 escaped from the boiler room. Willard Hughes 31 and Lloyd Pettry 22 were captured near Hamlin. Hughes brother Billy Joe 2 and Don Dowdy 18 and James Brewster 27 face aiding escapes in Lincoln County jail.
Virgil Browning sues United Insurance Co claiming June 3 1957 policy grants permanent disability benefits. Browning alleges disability began March 24 and seeks 35 dollars weekly for up to 20 weeks per year through July plus accrued benefits of 521 dollars and ongoing entitlement to further weekly benefits.

Charleston West Virginia UPI reports former state purchasing director John S Bell lost his appeal to be reinstated after suspension in 1970 following indictments in Kanawha County for purchasing irregularities The Civil Service Commission had ordered reinstatement to like status and pay but the high court rejected the appeal by a 5 0 vote Bell later became head of the state motor pool before appealing the decision.
Graveside services for Anthony David Roseblock infant son of Woodrow David and Brenda Richmond Roseblock were set for 1 p m at Sunset Memorial Park Beckley with Rev. Bill Menefee officiating. A 23 year old man stabbed two people including his wife, then boarded an empty American Airlines 707 with his one month old daughter at Buffalo International Airport. After hours of negotiations, he surrendered, handing the child to a officer unharmed. The mother Ethyl Smith, 20, was hospitalized in critical condition.
U S Secretary of State William P. Rogers held a two hour meeting with Greek officials in Athens including a half hour private talk with Prime Minister George Papadopoulos. Officials did not disclose topics. Rogers said differences exist but many common interests unite the two governments.
