Two Men Protest Property Assessments Before Board
Raleigh County Board of Equalization and Review heard two taxpayers protest their property valuations. Santa Milano challenged his Virginia Street building at 1400 dollars and lot at 200. A retired coal miner, small in stature, argued that Sophia could not be taxed fairly, since he could not rent it for enough to cover taxes. The board noted state law requires assessments at 50 percent of value and that the board compares similar properties. no changes were made to either case. John Foley, deputy assessor, defended the assessment as equal and cited added school health and lake levies.
