Senate Bill Eases Hiring Rules For School Board Spouses

Hung Jury Ends Motorist's Trial
The Raleigh County court ended Carlo Spradley's trial in a hung jury after a two day hearing with four women and eight men. Judge McCreery released Spradley on bond until the next term. Spradley was arrested Sept 28 1958 for speeding and obstructing officers following a scuffle with Beckley patrolmen. A separate case saw James Kincaid pleading guilty to grand larceny for stealing copper wire valued at $800 from J B Hilton on June 8 1957 and being remanded to jail until February 9 for sentencing.

Ballard Named As Special Judge In Raleigh County Court
Beckley reports that George L Ballard was appointed special judge of the Raleigh County Criminal Court today as juries were empaneled for a contested bastardy case in Circuit Court and for an under way criminal trial. The Plumley case opened with statements citing the November 15 1958 shooting at the Plumley home in Shady Spring. Patsy Lester of Sophia is the plaintiff and James Lee Hunt of Sophia is the defendant.
New York Danish ship hits iceberg south of Greenland
Coast Guard reports a 2,875 ton Danish ship struck an iceberg south of Greenland and sent distress signals as its engine rooms flooded. In Chicago area a nursing home west of the city trapped from 8 to 10 people in a fire, authorities announced.
