Flood strikes Southern West Virginia causing massive damage

Widespread flooding across Southern West Virginia prompted evacuations as rivers surged to record heights. The Oceana area, Princeton corridor, Coal River valley, Mullens and Whitesville faced extensive inundation, with roads blocked, bridges submerged, and homes flooded. National Guard and Salvation Army aided relief as schools closed and cold weather followed heavy rain.

Countians Kin Reurns to Spain

Agustia Rodriguez 26 of Sevilla Spain visits the area returning to the United States with intent to make the county his home. He traveled via New York and West Virginia visiting Crab Orchard and Charleston and attended Woodrow Wilson High School as a student. He plans to seek permission to return to the United States.

Dwarf Fruit Trees Spotlight in Raleigh County Guide

MOD Drive Nears One-Seventh of Raleigh County Goal

The Raleigh County March of Dimes drive nears one seventh of its $23,000 goal with $3,953.58 raised as of Tuesday afternoon. Chairman Mrs. James Mahoney announced include gains from Moose MOD Day $521.20 and Blue Crutches sale $118.20 plus $1,061.49 from pupils in 33 of the county's 169 schools.

Many Countians Fail To Respond to Appeal

Mrs. C. C. Lewis, 1936 Christmas seal sale chairman for the Raleigh County Tuberculosis and Health Association, says more than 5,000 county residents have not responded to seal sale letters sent in November. Contributions reach 9,526.42 dollars to date from about 5,000 donors, funds used for X-ray and educational programs. Public health officials note 150,000 undetected TB cases in the country, urging donations to find and cure missing cases.

Tax Revision Bill Would Aid Hospitalized Veterans

A tax revision bill to aid hospitalized veterans is to be presented to the 1957 Legislature. It would exempt from state cigarette taxes purchases by veterans groups and nonprofit agencies for free distribution to patients at VA facilities and Soldiers Homes, including Beckley and Pinecrest in Beckley. Sponsors, supported by veterans groups, say the exemption would allow more free cigarettes for hospitalized veterans by extending funds for such purchases.

Beckley girl Frances M. Hutchinson of 114 Ewart Ave tops Woodrow Wilson High School in the 1957 Search for the American Homemaker of Tomorrow. She earns state competition eligibility. the top state winner gains a 1500 scholarship and an educational tour, with Britannica set for her school. Second place at state awards 500 scholarship.

Rites Thursday For Clay Infant

Funeral services for Richard Lee Clay will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. in the Milton Mortuary Chapel with Dr. A J Cook officiating. Burial will follow in Clay Cemetery at Glen Daniel. The infant son of Clarence William and Ramona Josephine Miles Clay of Glen Daniel died after birth at 9 27 a.m. Tuesday in a local hospital. Survived by maternal grandparents Mr and Mrs Joseph Miles and paternal grandparents Mr and Mrs Marvin Clay, both of Glen Daniel. The body will lie in state at the Milton Mortuary.

Allen Enters No Contest Plea in Bastardy Case

Allen Beckley entered a nolo contendere plea to a bastardy charge during Raleigh County sessions. Judge Harry L. McCreery ordered monthly child support payments. Allen’s prior failure to appear triggered a bond forfeiture and capias, leading to arrest. Roy Honaker of Killarney similarly pleaded nolo contendere to driving while intoxicated. a previous guilty plea report was incorrect. Petit jurors are to report at 9 a.m. Thursday.

New York Minister Aids Services at Stotesbury

New York minister Stanford Stuard assists in evangelistic services at Stotesbury this week. City Recruiting Station Commander Transferred

Capt. James E. Kelly, Beckley Recruiting Station commanding officer, transfers from Infantry to Artillery. He will report to Fort Sill for four months temporary duty and then to permanent assignment in Europe. Since Aug. 26, 1954, Kelly has held roles as Induction officer and administration officer. First Lt. William Noren will assume command on Kelly's departure Feb. 3.

A four week schedule of visits to area towns has been set up by Beck ley Social Security office representatives. The program aids filing for old age and survivors insurance disability insurance and to answer program questions. Rites Slated Thursday For City Man's Brother

Funeral services are planned Thursday for George K. Taylor of Clifton Forge Virginia brother of a Beckley resident. He died Monday night in Clifton Forge's Chesapeake and Ohio Hospital from cancer. Taylor had been manager of the McCreery Hotel for 21 years and earlier a Kanawha Hotel clerk for 15 years. He and his wife will be buried in Staunton Virginia following services at a Beckley sister's home.

Area taxpayers who worked for more than one employer during 1996 should attach copies of all W-2 Forms when filing. Check total income tax withheld against tax owed and ensure social security tax was not overpaid. If missing certificates, contact employers and obtain duplicates. IRS holds copies of all W-2s.

Five Schools Represented At Press Group Meet

The Raleigh Wyoming County Press Association met at Mark Twain High School at 7 30 pm Monday with representatives from Glen Rogers Mullens Mark Twain Woodrow Wilson and Clear Fork High Schools. Reports covered judging of school papers by the Scholastic Press Associations and West Virginia University’s judging. Officer slate includes Doreen Lilly president Drema Hall vice president Shelvin Adams secretary and Ercelle Courington treasurer. Inspectors Impressed With Clinic Facilities

Officials toured Spencer and Weston State Hospitals noting modern clinic buildings with TV lounges libraries and beauty shops. At Spencer about 40 clinic patients receive more staff attention than other wards while state patients mostly pay $1 daily. this raises concerns over hospital finances and how $5 daily revenue is handled. A 17-year-old runaway girl was jailed in Raleigh County awaiting Juvenile Court action as staff highlighted funding disparities.

Hospital psychiatry says majority treated and released in small ward

The hospital superintendent told visiting legislators that the 55 bed ward treats and releases more people than the state’s 900 beds elsewhere. Dr East said many clinic patients are alcoholics or senile, should be in nursing homes, not mental institutions. He urged restricting admissions to those with mental conditions beyond alcoholism or senility to ease overcrowding. Spare beds at Spencer are largely custodial. proper treatment at admission is often delayed, increasing regression and costs.

Akron Man Expected To Waive Extradition

Akron man William Carmony is set to waive extradition today in Raleigh County Court to return to Ohio on grand larceny charges. He was arrested in Beckley after attempting coin exchanges and carried about $310. Police also jailed Daniel Cogart on a peace warrant and Ernie Chambers was fined and jailed for assault and drunkenness after arraignment.

Cars collide at city intersection with two drivers named

Police report a two car crash at 2 35 pm Tuesday at Johnstown Road and Garfield Street. Vehicles driven by Carson S Totten 37 of 16 Saunders Ave and Dorothy Mackey of 421 Ewart Ave sustained about 60 dollars in damage. Both drivers say they had a green light.
