Teachers Since 1944 Push to Refill Raleigh County Roster
Raleigh County has lost 219 teachers since 1941-42 including those entering the armed forces, Superintendent E. Mel Ashworth said. Emergency certificates rose from none to 49 in 1943 then to 47 in 1942 during the current session. Many hold emergency certificates after earlier declines in certification. Fifty nine substitutes hold emergency certificates. About six additional college hours will be taken by many to raise certificates. Draft boards will pause principal vacancies until the end of the current session. A meeting of elementary principals is planned at Beckley Junior High School Friday at 7:30 p.m. with discussions on supervision in Raleigh County schools.
