Guilty Plea Entered in Raleigh County Case

Robert K. Burleson pleaded guilty to an attempt to break and enter in Raleigh County Criminal Court. Judge Harry L. MccCreery accepted the plea and set February 14 to pass judgment. Hinton men sign confessions in B and E case

Two Hinton men Patrick Connor and Richard Williams admitted to breaking into the D. C. Fitzgerald Inc. store in Hinton on January 22. They face a hearing at 10 a.m. Tuesday before Magistrate J. E. Holt. Seven guns taken from the store remain unfound. Zelma Breckenridge and Cordillia Fullen, previously charged in connection with the case, were released after charges were dropped. Connor and Williams were jailed. Williams later questioned, then returned to Hinton.

Two Cars Stolen In Beckley Area

Legislature to fix lawmakers salaries by statute

West Virginia lawmakers seek to change constitutional salary rules via statute. Regular 60 day sessions occur in odd years with 30 day budget sessions on even years, called by the governor to cover specific items. A two thirds vote is required for non budget items during budget sessions. The introduced bill also revises the state personal income tax, shifting to a tiered rate from 1.2 percent to 9.409 percent based on income, while preserving federal tax linkage.

Two Die In West Virginia Fires Including Fairmont Temple

A weekend string of fires in West Virginia killed two people and destroyed the historic Baptist Temple in Fairmont built in 1908. Robert Jenkins McClellan, 66, died in a Logan one room home fire believed started by coal embers. June McBride, 75, died from burns after clothing ignited.
