Britons Launch First Malaya Counteroffensive Near Singapore

British jungle troops took the initiative in Malaya, striking 70 miles north of Singapore as Hurricanes arrive over the island. Ground forces, supported by air power, engaged Japanese divisions near Bukit Payong and the Muar River, with transport lines and enemy columns heavily hit.

Moscow Battle Ends As Mozhaisk Is Recaptured

Soviet dispatches report the Battle of Moscow concluded with Mozhaisk recaptured, 57 miles west of Moscow, as German forces suffer heavy losses. Judge Crouse Orders Twenty More Jurors Summoned This After

Criminal court convened to try Henry Hyden Smith but the murder trial was postponed due to juror shortages. Five jurors objected to the death penalty, prompting Judge Clay S. Crouse to summon 20 additional jurors for the afternoon session. Court adjourned to 1:15 pm. Mills and Perry charges dismissed. McGraw bastardy case postponed to February 7. New jurors include Henry Allen Bolt Lacy Bone and others from Beckley Shady Spring East Gulf and Affinity. Mary Eliza Downs pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter for the stabbing of C. D. Trent Jr. and was sentenced to one to five years. Robert Williams pled guilty to unlawful wounding. sentencing set for February 3. Bill Drake received 1 to 15 years plus six months for breaking jail. Larry Jarrett fate pending after driving while drunk charge.

Japs Renew Heavy Luzon Attacks Chief Spade Waives Hearing

Mount Hope police chief J M Spade and Harry Helton waived preliminary hearings and were bound over to the grand jury on felonious assault and accessory after the fact charges. Each posted 500 bond after a shooting near Summerslee left Mrs Lewis Butts in Oak Hill Hospital. Mayor Garrett supported Spade awaiting proof of guilt while defending his conduct.

Gonorrhea Clinic See Rapid Growth in County

The county health department reports rapid expansion of its gonorrhea clinic as six new and 13 old cases were treated yesterday, up from six at the previous week's first post-separation day, with 19 total cases. Contract approved for 12 room addition at Woodrow Wilson High

D E Vipperman signed the contract this morning to build a 12 room addition at Woodrow Wilson High School with a bid of 49 488 the lowest of five. Bond clearance from Maryland Casualty Company prompted final approval by board officials and architect Mahood. Moving of a W P A book binding frame will precede construction as plans for other buildings progress.

Health Center program starts at Slab Fork

The first health center session at Slab Fork drew 17 children and nine mothers. Nurses administered five toxoids and four smallpox vaccines, with conferences on child health needs. The center opens on the third Wednesday each month from 10 to 3, and a pre-natal clinic with Dr. J H Greene is planned for Tuesday from 10 to 3.

Tucker Has Hardest Snow

Snow depths ranged from half an inch to a inch and a half across West Virginia prompting cinder crews to treat slippery highways. The State Road Commission reported activity in Clarksburg Huntington Weston Elkins Lewisburg and Princeton districts with several counties affected. Weston area's sections were most hazardous with U.S. 50 between Fellowsville and Aurora in Preston County seeing about an inch. Tucker County recorded the deepest fall at one and a half inches while Dodd Ridge and Harrison reported half an inch.

Berlin radio slips in Malaya miscue with Australia loss

A Berlin radio announcer on a New York NBC broadcast stumbled over a line during heavy fighting in Malaya. The misread quote confused the audience as the announcer corrected the phrase Australians lost ground while noting Italian gains.

Red Cross Receives Three Donations Toward Fund

The Red Cross War Relief Fund received three more donations bringing the total to 2726.68. Donors include Montcoal Ladies Aid Society 20. Rev J M Helm 5. WCTU Mrs O O Harrard 5.
