Venezuela at crossroads as Betancourt nears end of term
In Caracas, Venezuela faces mounting unemployment near 25 percent as Romulo Betancourt’s presidency enters its final year. Observers fear a coming political struggle after the term ends, with capital already moving abroad and factions forming for next December’s election. Some expect a wave of government spending to sustain stability, while others warn a weak successor could trigger upheaval. Citizens and diplomats stress Venezuela’s need for skilled labor, diversified industry, and tourism promotion, opposed by political calculations in the current election year.
