Poseidon Missile to reshape Navy strategic role urged
In a congressional address President Johnson announced development of the Poseidon missile, doubling Polaris accuracy to about 2 megatons. Navy submarines would target specific military sites and, with mixed Poseidon and Polaris missiles, offer options against both military targets and cities. The plan also includes a new SRAM for bombers and diverse new devices to improve penetration and targeting. Defense spending is projected to fall by 300 million, with this year's total at 49.3 billion dollars.
