Legislature's Sales Tax Extension Faces Opposition
A late June special session enacted the sales tax extension amid 56 votes in favor as labor unions oppose the regressive levy. Many Republicans and border Democrats fear reduced business, with talks of compensating revenue by reallocating funds from Road Commission and public works accounts. Some options include deleting groceries and medicines from the tax, though this would cut more than $10 million yearly. The Senate and House also advanced a Wheeling Ohio County Airport Authority bill, while debates on extending the 3 percent insurance premium tax continue. Senator Martin warned of unconstitutionality, but supporters cite prior court rulings upholding similar public debt arrangements.
