President Eisenhower signals readiness to use his veto power to keep the 1960 budget near 77 billion dollars, aiming for a slight revenue surplus while urging bipartisan support for restraint. Officials warn of a higher current-year deficit and broader IMF and spending pressures.
Washington AP Mikoyan and Secretary of State Dulles held probing talks on German unification and Berlin fate amid East-West deadlock. Diplomatic sources say the session aimed to probe concessions and possible paths to high level negotiations later this year. Curtailed by Hungarian protests and tightened security, the meeting focused on whether the Soviet government was ready for serious talks toward a German settlement.
A winter storm dumped two to eight inches across the state causing hazardous roads. State Police report no major accidents while six to nine SAC cinder crews operated from early morning. Piedmont Airlines canceled landings at Raleigh County Memorial Airport due to ice crust and snow. Four inches fell at Bald Knob Ski Slopes, where machines spread additional snow. The SRC mobilized about 1,700 workers with trucks and graders spreading cinders, chips, calcium chloride and salt to restore passable conditions.
Legislators hear plans for the 1963 centennial celebration with Osher Parsons, Hodel, Stern, and Phil Conley present. Stern outlines tentative plans and shows slides of the Centennial Special train, coaches, street decorations, and the proposed official emblem.
Funeral services for Rev. Royce Cather French will be at 2 20 p.m. Sunday at Ghent Freewill Baptist Church with ministers R H Dean French Williams and Cecil Combs officiating. Burial in Tom Lilly Cemetery Ghent. He died at 2 p.m. Thursday in a local hospital after several weeks illness. He was 51 and a son of Henderson and Carrie Lilly French of Ghent born April 24 1907 in Beckley. An ordained Baptist minister, he pastored Gordon Freewill Baptist Church at Charmco and also served Crow and Ghent Freewill Baptist churches. He belonged to Freewill Baptist Churches Ordination Board and executive and organizing boards. Survivors include his wife Edith Doss four sons Carlos and Jimmy in Hopewell Va Bobby and Tex at home one daughter Coretta at home one brother Raleigh County Deputy Sheriff Zina French of Daniels two sisters Marie Bowling of Beckley and Anna Lee of Torrance Calif and three grandchildren. The body will be moved from Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home to the residence at 5 p.m. Saturday Nephews will serve as pallbearers.
Bruno Gustinski 50 Stamford City died 5 p.m. Thursday in a local hospital. Born in Austria-Hungary April 4, 1908 he came to the United States 39 years ago. He worked as a motorman for New River and Pocahontas Consolidated Coal Co. Layland for 15 years and belonged to United Mine Workers Local 5821. Survivors include his wife Anna Uher Gustinski, mother Mary Gustinski, a daughter Mary Ann Kores, a brother Claude, and two grandchildren. Body to be moved to residence at 1 a.m. Saturday and funeral set for 2 p.m. Sunday at the residence conducted by Rev Car Johnson. Burial Sunset Memorial Park. Pallbearers: Bennett, Hilbert, Welch, Toke, McClanahan, Petrosky.
Mrs Ameli Luckerson Beck ley died in a Bluefield hospital at 9 20 pm Thursday. The body is at the C D Trent Funeral Home while arrangements are pending completion.
West Virginia will get 57 carloads of flour corn meal milk and butter as surplus commodities. The shipment follows a special investigation into the state's distribution to the needy. Senators Byrd and Randolph say personnel shortages and a jump in need from 200000 to 300000 challenged timely delivery.
Hazel Virginia Sizemore 42 died at 1 45 am in Mullens hospital after a stroke at her Otsego home. Born April 11 1916 she was daughter of Luna Stoneman and the late Harve Stoneman. Survived by husband Alva three sons Ronald James Robert and one more at home four daughters and many relatives. Funeral arrangements set with Evangelist Elmer Wood at noon Sunday at Black Eagle Community Church. Burial Sunset Memorial Park Beckley. Robertson and Foglesong Funeral Home to Corinne residence of her mother by 5 pm Saturday.
General George C. Marshall 78 is in satisfactory condition after a slight stroke. He suffered the stroke Thursday at his Pinehurst home and was transported by ambulance to Womack General Hospital in Fort Bragg, where he occupies a private room. His wife has a nearby room.
Beckley Scouts from eleven troops conduct a house-to-house clothing drive for the Beckley Chamber of Commerce. Residents should place clothing on porches and a bus on Main Street will receive items. Leaders include Albert Allen and James D. Prince among others.
State Road Commissioner Patrick C. Graney sent letters to each legislator offering access to SRC information. He proposed supplying annual and budget reports, a ten year road plan brochure, and a project list of 1959 county road work under the maintenance program.
The March of Dimes Teen-age Road Block will be held Saturday despite rain. Seventy-five Woodrow Wilson High School Key Club members, directed by John Lynn and Paul Cox, will stop traffic at six points to seek 10 cents to one dollar donations and distribute stickers. Beckley National Guard will assist with setup and display a tank, troop carrier, and four jeeps. Raleigh County chair Bill Wilbur urges more funds for the National Foundation programs aiding polio victims, birth defects, and arthritis. The Navy recruiting office will show The Challenge film, with projection by Bar ney Alexnovitch, arranged through E Gail Akers.
Baileyville reporter notes 39 year old Eugene Hizer of Lillydale is in critical condition at Wyoming General Hospital after his pickup was struck by a Virginian Railway train at a railroad crossing near Baileyville Super Market before 6:30 am. He was en route to work at Phillips Coal Co. The truck is badly torn up and further details were not learned.
Roland Sparks of Beckley was jailed in Raleigh County Jail at 12 10 am on an assault warrant from Magistrate Cotton White. Six Federal prisoners were removed from the jail at 8 30 am by a U S Deputy Marshal to Lewisburg Pa. Five of the men were being held en route Pascal Sparks Charles Shrewsbury Lawrence Harris Julius F Burton Joe Carter Walton Farley no addresses listed. John H Combs of Bluefield was jailed at 5 pm Thursday on a charge of interstate transportation of a stolen motor vehicle.
Washington AP says an Atlas missile test from Cape Canaveral flew under 200 miles due to trouble in the rocket engine system. Air Force officials reported the issue after the Thursday night launch.
West Virginia legislators debate a bill to lower voting age to 18, arguing that youths fit to serve and deserve a say in government. The measure, sponsored by Herbert Schuphach and a colleague, would let 18-year-olds vote as soon as the bill passes.
Funeral services for Mrs. Kate Cornelia Harvey will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church with Rev. Alvin Cook officiating. Surviving are her mother Mrs. Lilly, husband C. E. Harvey, a daughter Mrs. Virgil Stover, a stepson Rev. James E. Harvey, a stepdaughter, three brothers, three sisters and four grandchildren. The body will lie at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home until service time.
Funeral services for Mrs. Ine Fink age 60 of 204 Lincoln Street will be held Sunday at 2 PM at the First Baptist Church officiated by Dr. Alvin J. Cook. The body will be taken to the church at 1 PM from Webb and Neal Funeral Home. Burial is in Wildwood Cemetery with Eastern Star graveside rites. Pallbearers listed are Fred Clark Tilman Smith James R Lowe Frank Lowe the Rev Anthony Garges W I Taylor and Paul Wiseman. Mrs. Fink died Thursday morning in a local hospital from a coronary occlusion.
Evangelist Billy Graham will spend a month in seclusion after Mayo Clinic specialists ordered rest and medication for an ailing left eye. The 40 year old evangelist plans to rest en route to Australia where a revival tour starts February 15.
Snow flurries and strong winds move through West Virginia tonight with temperatures dropping to 5 to 10 degrees. Saturday will be mostly cloudy and windy with continued very cold conditions and additional snow flurries.
