The navy said an allied merchant vessel was attacked in New York waters, confirming a submarine action previously released by the Coast Guard at Quogue Long Island. Tams Employes Donate $371.50 War Relief Effort Grows

Donations continue in the Red Cross war relief drive with Gulf Smokeless Coal Company workers adding 115 to their 371.50 total. Other contributors include Barger Roofing Company, Beckley Machine and Electric, Garnet Gravely, and many individuals. Junior Red Cross reports 2167 members in seven county high schools and 14,380 in 407 elementary rooms, with 14.40 raised for the Service Fund and ongoing projects such as sweaters and beanies for veterans.

Court Upholds Tax Increase for Norfolk and Western

Charleston West Virginia Supreme Court justice Thomas H. S. Curd in Welch today upheld the State Board of Public Works in fixing 75,325,000 as the taxable value of the Norfolk and Western Railroad properties in the state. The board, led by Governor Neely, raised 1941 railroad assessments by about 38,000,000, with the Norfolk and Western figure up from 65,000,000 in 1940 to 75,325,000 in 1941.

Navy seeks women for nurses corps and other draft updates

The navy releases seek an unlimited number of graduate registered unmarried female nurses aged 22 to 40 for the naval reserve corps with wartime obligation. Earl Willis of Prosperity is enlisting in Charleston. Recruiter Rudolf Linek says men may enlist for parachute troops with age 20 to 30, weight under 185 pounds and 20 to 40 vision. Army Air Corps loosens age to 18 to 26, accepts married applicants with self supporting wives, and will reassign trainees who wash out. Ground duty commissions open for engineering, communications, meteorology and armament. Bryant Davis of Sangar and Henry Arthur Gill of Summerlee apply for Marine Corps enlistment.

Beckley Airport To Remain Open Under New Rules

Major Hubert Stark, inspector for the state board of aeronautics, said only about ten of West Virginia's 22 flying fields will stay open with full-time guards under the new regulations. The likely operable sites include Glendale near Wheeling, Parkersburg, Morgantown, Huntington, Charleston, Clarksburg, Princeton, Beckley, White Sulphur Springs and the Charleston seaplane base. The remaining fields may not afford 24-hour guard coverage.

Federal Auto Stamps Go On Sale Here Tomorrow

Beckley post office will begin selling federal automobile tax stamps tomorrow at the stamp window. Postmaster J. T. Hollandsworth Jr. urges buyers to bring vehicle registration cards for motor number, make, design, and other details. Stamps cost 2.09 per vehicle and must be displayed until July 1 when a new 5 stamp is required. All post offices are authorized to sell stamps, with Beckley receiving 3,000 stamps from Charleston to supply about 20 Southern West Virginia counties.

First Aid Class Starts Monday at Rhodell School

First aid instructions for adults will begin at the Rhodell school Monday at 7 p m with Earl Halsey principal of the East Gulf school as instructor. Members of the adult citizenship class taught at Rhodell by Mrs. Cecil Staton under the WPA education and recreation program are urged to enroll in the first aid class, but others are invited.

Japanese Assault Forces Face MacArthur at Batan

A Rome radio report said the Japanese fleet was in action off the Batan peninsula where General Douglas MacArthur’s forces hold a heroic line. A War Department bulletin cited aggressive infiltration by Japanese shock troops along the peninsula and ongoing fighting.

Singing Troops Score Victory In 1st Battle

Bronzed jungle-trained Australian troops hacked through Japanese tanks and infantry in their first Malay campaign engagement. British HQ reported heavy Japanese casualties and six tanks destroyed. Four Youths Held For Theft And Related Charges

A 17 year old boy was bonded, three younger youths remain in juvenile custody after arrest on breaking and entering charges. Griff Jarrell 17 released on bond. Arley Phelps 16 jailed in default of 500 bond. Jarrell held for grand jury. Phelps by magistrate. Additional youths jailed on driving without license and related offenses with fines and costs.
