Cloudy and warmer in Beckley and vicinity with a chance of light rain or drizzle this afternoon and tonight. Highs in the mid 40s, lows in the upper 30s. Mostly cloudy Tuesday with highs in the mid 50s and a 20 to 50 percent precipitation chance.
A unanimous Maryland three-judge panel urged disbarment for former Vice President Spiro T. Agnew. The panel cited deliberate tax reporting failures for 1967 totaling nearly $30,000, noting the plea to tax evasion and Agnew’s resignation prior to the probe’s full scope. The Maryland Court of Appeals will take final action.
The Supreme Court agreed to hear arguments on whether a state can compel a newspaper to provide free reply space to a political candidate criticized by the publication. Florida and Mississippi have such laws and other states may follow if constitutional. The case centers on the Miami Herald and related Florida statute.
Raleigh County Circuit Clerk C Harold Hanks announced he will open Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to noon for public convenience until the legislature sets official courthouse hours. State Senator Pat Hamilton said a bill was filed to resolve ongoing debate on county courthouse days. The move follows a recent Supreme Court ruling deeming a prior Saturday hours amendment in WVN as arbitrary.

Sears Roebuck and Co does not plan a large new retail store in Beckley within four to five years. Instead, property manager I A W Davis of Greensboro says the company will expand its Beckley catalog operation in early 1974 with self service customer pickup to improve local service amidst growing Beckley Raleigh County markets.
