West ini gets $475377 in welfare work grant

UPI reports Charleston West ini receives 475377 in supplemental funds from the U S Department of Labor to finance Civil Works projects through June 30 under the Welfare Work Incentive program. The program, started by a summer special session, assigns unemployed men and women to projects for occupational training.

Morgantown Police Chief Retires After 26 Years Service

John W. Lewis ends a 26 year law enforcement career and steps down as Morgantown police chief after 12 years in that role. Lt Bennie F. Palmer will replace him on January 16. Palmer, 39, began as a patrolman in 1957.

Escapee Held in Death Of FBI Agents

Billie Austin Bryant, 29, an escaped convict and seven time bank robber, was captured in an attic seven hours after fatally shooting FBI agents Anthony Palmisano and Edwin Woodriffe outside Bryant's estranged wife’s apartment in Southeast Washington. Bryant surrendered after tossing his gun through an attic trap door. The double slaying followed a bank robbery in Maryland. Woodriffe and Palmisano left behind widows and children. Bryant had escaped from Lorton Federal Reformatory last August and faced murder charges in federal court.
