Washington reports the 89th Congress now led by Democrats plans rapid moves on President Johnsons Great Society program. Medicare, Appalachian revitalization, poverty aid, excise tax cuts, immigration liberalization, and school aid top the agenda with hopes of early action before Johnsons inauguration.
Vatican announces Pope Paul VI has set September 14 to open the fourth and final session of the Second Vatican Council and that the council will close with its end. Closing date not set, expected to wind up in late November or early December.
Saigon reports the seven day Binh Gia fight left 442 Vietnamese and American casualties, with 19 Americans killed, wounded, or missing. The action, 40 miles southeast of Saigon, ran Dec 28 to Jan 3 as U.S. Marines ferried Vietnamese troops into battle and three Americans and 77 Vietnamese went missing.
In San Francisco a new storm driven by high altitude jet streams up to 150 mph moves into the flood battered Far West. After nearly three weeks of rain snow and winds the weather bureau warned the turbulence would last at least five days as streams continued to rise.
Beckley and vicinity enjoy mostly sunny skies this afternoon with a high near 55 degrees. Tonight will be partly cloudy with a low around 20. Wednesday brings variable clouds and a high in the 40s. River conditions show Greenbrier above normal and falling, Lake at 5 ft below normal with 7 gates open. A new gauge at Hinton reads 3.8 ft.
Bronson Cutting La Follette, 28, is sworn in as Wisconsin state attorney general, reviving the famed La Follette political lineage after 25 years. He is a grandson of the late Sen. Robert M. Fighting Bob La Follette. Indonesian officials say the nation’s decision to quit the United Nations is irrevocable despite delays in notification. Talks resume in Pittsburgh as steelmakers and United Steelworkers end an 18 day holiday recess. The Duke of Windsor returns to New York society after recovering from an artery operation in Houston. Former heavyweight Natie Brown and Glenn Burdette of Charleston are held for grand jury on charges of receiving stolen goods. Ronald Cherry, 21, held for fatal stabbing of a Black youth in Orangeburg, S. C., moved to state prison for safety.
David Allen Ward of Rotterdam New York was indicted in Albany federal court for sending a letter to the White House threatening President Johnson. Nigerian President Azikiwe announced an agreement with Prime Minister Balewa to form a new government ending a five day crisis. Wetzel County officials in Paden City said an unidentified glass manufacturer expressed interest in locating a plant there.
Soviet unofficial sources welcomed President Johnson's hope for U S Soviet leader visits but doubted a trip could be arranged this year. They praised his pledge to improve trade with the Soviet Union but awaited formal invitations and official comment.
President Jolson invited the new Russian leaders to visit the United States to view America's economic vitality and peacetime drive. Johnson's aides expect Moscow to consider a return bid, as he plans European and Latin American trips and seeks peaceful understandings with Russia. De Gaulle show interest noted in a broader West European outreach.

WASHINGTON UPI Congressional reaction to President Johnsons State of the Union message was divided mostly along party lines. Democrats praised the message as wonderful and progress on domestic issues while Republicans said it sounded good but lacked clarity. Speaker John W. McCormack said it represents sound progress and a peace based on understanding. House Republican Leader Gerald Ford said the goals reflect those of all Americans.
Martinsburg Journal editorialized that Franklin D Roosevelt Jr may establish residence in Jefferson County West Virginia to run for the U S Senate in 1966 The piece notes Senator Jennings Randolph may not seek re election and cites Roosevelt a New York native with strong name recognition in West Virginia near Washington D C.
DETROIT UP I reports the auto industry faced UAW strikes and still produced 7,738,764 cars in 1964, beating 1963's 7,569,228 but below 1955's record 7,942,132. The industry anticipated reaching eight million for the first time, page 2.
The United Mine Workers Union trustees cut the retirement age for full benefits from 60 to 55 effective February 1 and raise monthly payments from 75 to 85 dollars. The change benefits more than 64,000 current miners and new pensioners nationwide.
In New Martinsville a Wetzel County mother of 11 died from carbon monoxide poisoning after the car she rode in became stuck in a ditch near Jacksonburg. The driver Dolph Towh also was overcome and treated at Wetzel County Hospital. The victim, Jessie Reese 51, from Jacksonburg, had a husband who died about a year ago. her children range from 8 to 32.
The Army Corps of Engineers recommends an 11 million dam and reservoir on Panther Creek near Jaeger in McDowell County to reduce flooding on Panther Creek Tug Fork and the Big Sandy and Ohio rivers. It would also boost water supply and free land for fishing and hunting near Panther State Forest. The Huntington district did not recommend a reservoir on lower Knox Creek in Kentucky near Williamson.
Mrs. Cora Bell Scott, 41, of South Charleston, died in a Spencer hospital after being found badly beaten in downtown Charleston before Christmas. An autopsy was ordered to determine the cause of death. Investigators found a bloody bicycle handlebar and a broken bottle near the scene. No arrests have been made.
Shady Foster and Claude Baker respond to the Presidents Appalachia focus noting limited mention of West Virginia while UPI describes a program to combat poverty and boost education. Baker, a Navy veteran with five children, and Foster family emphasize need for regional aid and jobs.
Ear L Corkran 55 shot his estranged wife Helen 55 to death at her Wheeling home then killed himself authorities said Chief Deputy Sheriff P C Miller noted Corkran entered early Tuesday wife stepped outside and was shot with a .22 pistol Their son Ralph threw bricks at his father to stop the attack authorities found Mrs Corkran dead on the lawn and Corkran nearby with the pistol.
CHICAGO UPI The 20 month wage dispute between the railroads and three shopcraft unions is stalemated with a federal appeals court likely next. A temporary court order halts a strike by 52 000 electricians machinists and sheet metal workers risking over 95 percent of rail cargo. Talks resumed after a one month gap but ended quickly with no progress.
President Johnson calls for peace with the Soviet Union and Asia, aims for a Great Society, and proposes a national education program, crime and waste reduction, tax cuts, and help for farms. He envisions reunification of Germany, global development, and a push to improve cities while expanding liberty and opportunity worldwide. He also intends European and Latin American visits and new rural region development efforts.
A dozen top entertainers filled in at the Royal Box Room in New York at Billy Eckstine’s three week engagement after he failed to appear for opening shows. Eckstine had not been seen since a Sunday rehearsal. police investigated while his son and mother awaited news. Notables like Sammy Davis Jr and Tony Bennett stepped in to perform in his absence.
