Not Paying Own Way for WV Turnpike in 1960
The West Virginia Turnpike, an 88 mile Charleston to Princeton toll road, posted its best year in 1960 yet remains financially unprofitable. General Manager W E Stahl said self support hinges on Interstate 77 completion from Canton to Charlotte. Traffic rose about 19,000 year over year and toll revenue edged up to 3.798 million, but only 64 percent of bond interest was covered. Truck traffic drove most of the gain as tolls favor heavy vehicles.
