Crash Victim's Funeral Sunday in Beckley

Funeral services for Andrew Lang Jr. of Beckley will be held Sunday at 1 p.m. in the Church of God and Christ East Beckley with Elder W C Cook officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Cemetery. Lang 26 died instantly Tuesday when his car struck a utility pole on South Fayette Street. He served in the Navy seven years. Automobile Used By Escapees Found Parked At Stotesbury

A car used by three escaped trustees from the Andrew S Rowan Home for The Aged at Sweet Springs was found near the highway at Stotesbury out of gas. Jackie Lee Higgins, 20, Beckley, was later captured at Crab Orchard and jailed in Raleigh County. Higgins said the trio escaped December 23 after a bathroom window was broken and they were given a car at White Sulphur Springs by a man who planned to report it stolen and set it on fire. Proudeman and an unnamed third man remained at large. Goudey was later apprehended in New Jersey. Higgins and Proudeman linked the escape to a New Jersey hold and a possible owner in Monroe County.

Grandview Man Succumbs At 62

Jackson Carper 62 of Grandview died at 7 30 p m Thursday in a local hospital after several weeks illness. Born Jan 8 1896 in Grandview he was a son of the late Luther Carper and Tamsie Love Carper. A retired coal miner and World War II veteran he belonged to United Mine Workers of America. Surviving are his mother, one brother Royal Carper of Crow and two sisters Mrs Nile Calloway Beckley and Mrs Lon Meadows White Oak. Miner Recovering After State Fall Involving Bare

A Crab Orchard man Buddie Lee Bare, 2, employed by Lilly Coal Co., was admitted to Beckley Memorial Hospital at 10:15 a.m. Wednesday with back injuries from a state fall. He is reported in satisfactory condition today.

New Year Babies Reported In Beckley

Beckley welcomed three New Year babies across its hospitals. At Raleigh General Hospital Dr John A Hedrick delivered the first baby of the year at 7 10 am a girl weighing 8 5. The mother is Mrs Charles Gambrell Glen View. A Beckley Memorial Hospital spokesman said the second baby arrived at 5 46 pm a girl born to Mr and Mrs Billy Rock Glen Morgan weighing 6 14 1 2 pounds. Beckley Hospital reported a third baby a boy born at 6 05 pm to Mr Gary Cooper of MacArthur. The VA Hospital said no New Year baby arrived.

Hazardous weather conditions were blamed today for a sharp rise in the nation’s New Year holiday traffic death toll. The death toll rate was running ahead of the record total of 409 set in the four-day New Year holiday period.

Alma S. Ratliff Dies After Illness At 50

Miss Alma S. Ratliff 50 of Glen Morgan died in a Beckley hospital at 3 45 a m after a long illness. Born August 13 1908 in Mercer County she was a daughter of the late Robert and Sarah Workman Ratliff. She was a member of the Church of God. Survivors include brothers Ira Ratliff Crow and Arthur Ratliff Huntington. Body remaining at Keyser Bryant Funeral Home. Burial in Odd Cemetery.
