Coal Mine Labor Woes Foreshadow 1944 Output Falls
U S officials debate how many new miners are needed as coal shortages persist. Ickes calls manpower the essential issue while estimates of output gains range from three to eight percent. The War Manpower Commission blames strikes for wasteful manpower use and notes 400 000 bituminous miners today, down 70 000 from a year earlier, with about 20 000 more expected to leave in 1944.
