Dairy Farmers See Milk Supplies Decline Despite Higher Sales
Agricultural Extension Service specialists at West Virginia University report U S farms selling milk are dropping in number. Nationally the count of milk cows fell 19 percent from 1941 to 1950 and another 20 percent from 1950 to 1954, even as total milk sales per farm rose. Variations among states are noted with California over 400 000 pounds per farm and Tennessee under 30 000 pounds, and every state shows higher per farm production than five years earlier. The rise is partly due to more cows per farm and improved efficiency from better feeding and management.
