An Alitalia DC7 bound for New York crashed after takeoff from Shannon Airport and exploded into a cemetery and fields. Twenty six aboard were killed with three more dying later. survivors faced severe burns as rescue teams worked through debris and scattered bodies amid a cold, clear dawn.
A U S Navy plane and a Brazilian airliner crashed near Guanabara Bay killing 61. Rescue boats searched for bodies as President Eisenhower toured Brazil. By Thursday 25 bodies were recovered leaving 35 dead and three survivors from the U S group.
A foggy Rio de Janeiro crash killed more than 60 people, including 19 Navy musicians. In a Dallas courtroom Justice of Peace W E Richburg ordered Bruno the Beagle to be returned to Dr. Howard H. McClure Jr. after the doctor demonstrated the dog’s tricks. Johnny Ray Clark, 11, had cared for Bruno for six months, but the judge ruled in favor of the owner.
