Reclamation faces staff and bond hurdles in mining policy
Latimer notes the reclamation fund holds about 2 million dollars funded by 30 dollar per acre fees for disturbed lands and orphaned sites. He says last year 600 thousand to 700 thousand was spent on reclamation while more engineers are needed. He has denied three strip mining permits recently and urges six field inspectors and two specialists, but the budget lacks these eight positions. He also pushes higher bond requirements as current caps may not cover reclamation costs.
