Charleston AP reports lawmakers debated a package to boost sales and gasoline taxes to fund road work. Senate votes approved raising the gasoline tax one cent to seven per gallon and increasing vehicle license fees, with earmarks to match federal Interstate funds. House advance awaited.
A Beckley West Virginia civic delegation plans a Saturday conference with U S Senators Randolph and Byrd in Washington D C. They will meet with O A Arthur Associates to discuss industrial development and government contracts and consider obtaining surplus construction equipment for county projects. Potential projects include landfills park work and conservation aid such as fire trails dams on small streams.
A Raleigh County Circuit Court jury was impaneled to hear a damage suit by Elijah Carter of Hamer Heights against Willis Water Works owner George Willis for alleged long term inadequate water supply. Beckley lawyer L L Scherer sits as special judge after Judge Knapp disqualified himself.
House Bill No. 37 sponsored by Raleigh County Delegate Roy Lee Harmon passed the State Senate after noon. The measure, already approved by the House this session, would bring willful forest fire setting by miners under the parental responsibility act. Gov. Mrs. Demina Harless a Stratton High School home economics teacher for 22 years died in her classroom during an off period about 11 10 am The death was attributed to a heart condition She became ill sat at her desk and told staff she might need a tranquilizer but collapsed before it could be given Dr A D Belton declared her dead upon arrival No pupils were present Faculty assisted She was a Raleigh County native West Virginia State College graduate and Columbia University holder of a masters in home economics Survivors include her husband Bernard C and her mother Mrs Mary Marshall and a sister Mrs DD Crawford Jr both of nearby addresses
Three Cleveland men Richard Debolt Robert Burgess and William Henry Wilkinson were arrested early today by State Police after their car wrecked at Flat Top. They face petit larceny charges for taking merchandise left in front of Willard's Super Market Beckley. The suspects fled the scene after the crash and were later captured on the highway. Police estimate $200 damage to the 1951 model car and will check if the vehicle was stolen.
Piedmont Airlines and its 160 pilots signed an 18 month contract last Saturday offering an average pay raise of about 100 dollars monthly. The pilots had been working under no contract since March 1. Piedmont Vice President H K Saunders said the company is satisfied with the agreement.
Emergency hospital gear arrives on a tractor trailer and is unloaded at the county jail. The equipment will be stored at the VA Hospital for use in case of an enemy attack or a major natural disaster.

Lawrence Tully, Raleigh County chairman, reports $959.80 raised for Sundays door to door campaign for the 1959 Heart Association Fund Drive. Of this total $766.78 has been turned in, and Beckley co chair Mrs. R. J. Howard adds $193.02 to be delivered this afternoon.
In a Brooklyn theater district dispute, two teenage gangs clashed after an amusement arcade pinball session. Tony Labanchino aged 17 died, John Lombardi 17 was wounded in the hand, and four youths were arrested on homicide charges. The Sands St Angels and the Mau Maus were named as rival groups.

Carmichaels Pa AP US Steel Corps Robena Mine the worlds largest mechanized soft coal operation was idle today in a work stoppage by a United Mine Workers local. The Mine Safety Committee pulled 900 workers off the afternoon shift yesterday in protest of a practice used in hauling men into the mine. The company has refused to discuss the grievance until the entire force of 1990 miners returns to work.
Beckley City Council meets at City Hall at 7 34 pm to discuss routine business items. Council members plan to address agenda items and municipal matters in the session tonight.
Douglas McHenry president of the American Concrete Institute outlines dyed cement as a new highway idea. Colored pavements would guide drivers through confusing intersections and forks, proposed at the institute's convention in Los Angeles.
