Major Barkley, WWII and Korean War veteran, died in an automobile accident in Heidieburg Germany. Survivors include Rose, his parents, and Captain Richard Berkley in Vietnam. He had served with the Tank Battalion and Army Reserves. Burial details and survivors listed. Awards and memorials noted for a long service career.
Omer C. Kessler 85 of 108 Cedar St died at 4 am after a long illness in a local hospital. Born December 20 18, he was the son of the late George F. and Caroline Maddy Kessler. A retired havorster for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad with over 40 years of service he belonged to Calloway Heights Missionary Baptist Church Woolmen and Renford Brotherhood. Survivors include his wife Laura Shumate Kessler three sons Clarence Bed Hotel Orionsville Mick and Newman Albuquerque NM one grandchild and nine great grandchildren. Body located at Calfee Funeral Home pending funeral arrangements.
Beirut reports seven men convicted of spying for Israel were executed in Baghdad and bodies were hung in Liberation Square. An eighth man had his sentence commuted for aiding authorities, while a ninth remains at large. Trial by a revolutionary court on February 11 led to the executions and later announcements noted civilian and soldier executions as well. None of the executed were Jewish.
