At 9 48 a m EST the 93 foot Atlas rocket generates about 360000 pounds of thrust launching John Glenn and his Friendship 7 capsule skyward in a historic spaceflight.
American astronaut John Glenn achieved orbital flight aboard Friendship 7 aboard the Atlas rocket, lifting from Cape Canaveral at 9:48 a.m. EST and circling the globe once at speeds near 17 545 miles per hour. The mission marked the first American orbital journey and intensified U.S. spaceflight plans for the year.
Former President Eisenhower and Richard Nixon played a second round of golf at Palm Desert while holding informal political talks. Nixon then returned to Los Angeles as the session ended Monday afternoon.
Weather forecast notes cloudy and colder conditions with snow flurries, especially in northern areas. Highs near 28 to 35 degrees, tonight's low 12 to 20, Wednesday light clouds and continued cold.
